Ugiri (Irvingia gabonensis)

Yields: 1 Serving

Ugiri (Irvingia gabonensis) fruit has compounds with antioxidant (free radical scavenging) such as flavonoids, phlobatannins and alkaloids.

The fruit is similar to a mango, the flesh is eaten as fruit while the seed (Ogbono) are used as soup thinking.

Ugiri flesh is a sweet edible fruit, about 2 to 3 inches wide, ripening from green to yellow.

It prevent the synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids and reduce fasting blood sugar levels.

The sweet fruit is fibrous and i ate as much as i can anytime i go around the tree.

You either eat whole or use it to make smoothies.

Water, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, protein,Vitamin and calcium are the nutrients you get from ugiri flesh.

The seed could be use to make ogbono soup,it is not the original one.

Ogbono flesh is bitter and not edible.

The seed of ugiri  lower  cholesterol because of their high fiber content. The fiber increases removal of cholesterol from the body.

The seed contain a variety of vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and iron.

Some research suggests that the seeds might also affect fat cells, which might reduce fat cell growth and increase the breakdown of fats.

  • High cholesterol. Studies show that ugiri seed might reduce bad cholesterol levels and increase good cholesterol levels in people who are overweight. But this research is low quality.
  • Obesity. Studies show that ugiri  seed might help reduce weight in people who are overweight, especially if combined with a low calorie diet. But this research is poor quality.
  • In one word, Ogbono burns fat which is good news. Try eating it with a complex carbohydrate and not simple carbohydrate.
